Sleepy Baby Bear & Bunny Lovey Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern

There’s just something so special about a handmade baby lovey. They become little comfort toys that get carried everywhere – tucked into prams, cuddled at nap time, and loved long after babyhood has passed. These Sleepy Baby Bear & Bunny Lovey Blankets combine a soft crochet blanket with a sweet amigurumi bear and bunny topper, making them such a special gift for a new baby or little one.

I designed this pattern to feel relaxing and approachable, especially for crocheters wanting to dip their toes into amigurumi while still enjoying the familiar rhythm of blanket-making and vice-versa for amigurumi lovers wanting to try something a little different

Thoughtfully designed!

The Sleepy Baby Bear & Bunny Lovey is designed with both beginner crocheters and amigurumi makers in mind. Whether you’re confident with granny squares but new to amigurumi, or an amigurumi lover unsure about blanket-making, this pattern brings the best of both worlds together. It also pairs beautifully with the matching Sleepy Baby Bear & Bunny Stick Rattles, creating a gorgeous handmade gift set for baby showers, newborn gifts, or nursery decor.

As you crochet the head and ears, you’ll learn to work in spiral rounds using single crochet – an essential amigurumi skill. The blanket begins with a magic ring and includes a variety of stitches like double crochet, front post double crochet, chain stitches, and even treble crochet, expanding your crochet repertoire and helping you build skills and confidence as you go.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Lovey Pattern

  • Beginner-friendly introduction to amigurumi
  • Combines blanket-making with soft toy crochet
  • Creates a beautiful handmade baby gift
  • Relaxing and repetitive stitches
  • Includes both bear and bunny options
  • Perfect confidence-building project
  • Matches the Sleepy Baby Stick Rattles
  • Soft, cuddly, and heirloom-quality
  • Great stash-busting project for cotton yarn

Before You Start

These techniques are all used throughout the pattern and will help make the process feel much easier and more enjoyable.

Best Yarn for Crochet Baby Loveys

For the Sleepy Baby Bear & Bunny Lovey Blankets, I chose a soft cotton yarn that’s gentle, breathable, and durable – perfect for baby makes that are sure to be loved and cuddled often.

Cotton yarn provides beautiful stitch definition, which really helps the details of both the blanket and the amigurumi features stand out. It also holds its shape wonderfully, making these loveys feel extra special and heirloom-quality.

Because baby items are often washed frequently, cotton is also a practical choice thanks to its durability and easy-care properties.

The sample loveys were made using Heirloom Cotton 8 ply in soft neutral shades.

Yarn Substitutions

If you can’t find Heirloom Cotton 8 ply, some of my favourite alternatives include:

Choose a soft DK-weight cotton yarn with good stitch definition for best results.

Skill Level

Suggested Crochet Tools and Materials

Materials for the presented lovey blanket are listed below; materials can be substituted at your discretion.

The sample loveys were made using:

  • Heirloom Cotton 8 ply in Oat (6630) and Parchment (6617) for the bear
  • Glacier (6619) and Snow (6607) for the bunny

Gauge / Tension

Blanket Gauge
19 stitches and 9 rows in double crochet = 10cm x 10cm

Amigurumi Gauge
5 rounds = 3.7cm across
Tip: crochet the first 5 rounds of the head to use as a gauge swatch).

Finished Size

  • Blanket: approximately 33cm x 33cm
  • Head: approximately 22cm circumference

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern written in US crochet terms
  • Gauge is not important for this project
  • Read the entire pattern before you start.
  • Amigurumi pieces are worked in continuous spiral rounds unless otherwise instructed.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round..
  • I use the ‘X’ single crochet method for amigurumi parts as opposed to the traditional ‘V’ stitch method. This results in a tighter fabric and the finished toy ends up smaller than when using the traditional method. If you need further information on he difference between the two ways to make a single crochet, you can read more about it HERE.
  • Use a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label to reduce gaps when stuffing.
  • Stuff firmly but gradually for best shaping.
  • Pin pieces into place before sewing.
  • Leave long yarn tails where instructed for assembly.

Crochet Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • […] ‘X’ times = repeat instructions within brackets as directed
  • BLO = back loop only
  • ch = chain
  • cnr/s = corners
  • dc = double crochet
  • dec = decrease
  • FLO = front loop only
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase
  • Rnd/s = round/s
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst  = slip stitch
  • sp = space
  • st/s = stitch/es
  • tr = treble crochet

Special Stitch Instructions

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc)

Work a double crochet around the post of the stitch from front to back instead of into the top loops.

Embroidery Work

Embroider the eyes, nose and eyebrows on to the head with black thread.  I placed the eyes and the top of the nose between rounds 16 and 17 with 9 stitches between the eyes.  Use pink yarn to add little pink cheeks under the eyes.

Take your time when embroidering the face – these little details really bring your sleepy lovey to life.

TIP:

Bring embroidery yarn up through the base of the head and return it back down through the same area so all yarn tails remain hidden once attached to the blanket.

Amigurumi bear head for lovey blanket showing embroidered facial features.

Lovey Blanket Assembly

Step 1:

Lay the blanket flat and position the head on the blanket with the face centred on a diagonal with the blanket seam (starting point of each round) at the back.

Step 2:

Place the head onto the blanket in your desired position. While holding the head firmly in position, carefully turn your work over and using the yarn tail from the head, sew an ‘X’ as shown, being sure to pass through both the blanket and the head together. Don’t go outside the bounds of BLO Rnd 25 of the head.

Step 3:

Turn your work again and check that you are still happy with the position of the head. Next, begin sewing the blanket to the head from the right side, making your stitches above the BLO Rnd 25 of the head, as shown above. Pause sewing regularly to check the head is still in the correct position – you will be able to move it about a little if it is not. When you have made your way all around the head, secure & weave in the yarn tail. Your head & blanket should now be firmly attached.

Step 4:

Hold arms in position to the side of the head (lining it up with the blanket’s diagonal) & sew securely into place using the long yarn tail.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Your Sleepy Baby Lovey is finished!
