Testing the Yarn:

To give this yarn a true test of its versatility and quality, I chose to recreate my beloved Frankie The Little Fox Lovey in a soft, neutral colour palette. For this version, I selected Stone (W019), Ivory (W003), and Petal (W008), three shades that harmonise beautifully together to create a modern and timeless look.

I used a 4mm hook for both the blanket and the flower, which gave them a wonderfully soft and slightly airy texture, perfect for a cozy lovey. The 4mm hook size also highlighted the yarn’s stitch definition, creating neat, uniform stitches that really enhance the blanket’s beautiful shell pattern. For the smaller amigurumi parts—Frankie’s head, arms, snout and ears—I switched to a 2.5mm hook. This choice was ideal for the tighter, more compact stitches required for amigurumi, giving them a firm yet soft structure that holds up well to little hands. I couldn't have been happier with how Wren performed for these amigurumi parts.

Workability and Stitch Definition:

One of the standout features of Wren for me, is its remarkable stitch definition. This yarn produces neat, clearly defined stitches, which is perfect for detailed patterns and textured pieces - just perfect for Frankie!

The different hook sizes also allowed me to test the yarn's adaptability across varying stitch densities. The amigurumi details turned out precise and defined, while the blanket had a gorgeous drape, making it a wonderful balance between structure and softness. Wren was also incredibly smooth to work with, gliding effortlessly on and off my hook with hardly any splitting, even when I used the smaller hook size. This yarn's easy handling and resistance to splitting made the whole process smooth, allowing me to maintain a steady rhythm throughout.

Colour Range:

I just love a yarn line with a strong colour range, and although there are not as many colours available as some other ranges, Fiddlesticks Wren does not disappoint. With 52 stunning shades available—from vibrant brights to soft pastels and gentle neutrals—there’s a perfect option for any project. Whether you’re looking for bold contrasts for amigurumi or subtle tones for baby items, Fiddlesticks Wren has you covered. The only thing I would perhaps find myself wishing for are a few more skin tones for creating amigurumi dolls. That said, I think the neutral colour palette I chose for Frankie adds a charming, understated elegance to her, making this version versatile for any nursery or child’s space - I couldn't be happier with the selection.

Durability and Care:

Fiddlesticks Wren shows great promise when it comes to durability, and I anticipate it will stand up beautifully to regular use. Although I haven’t yet had the opportunity to fully test its resilience over time or see how it fares after multiple washes, the yarn’s texture and construction give me confidence that it will perform well in both areas.

The fibre’s quality and smoothness suggest that it’s less likely to pill or fuzz, which is a major bonus, especially for items like blankets, loveys, or wearable pieces that experience frequent handling. The yarn feels substantial without being overly heavy, giving it a sturdy yet soft feel that should withstand wear and tear gracefully. Even during the crochet process, I noticed no signs of fraying or excessive fuzz, which is often a good indicator of a yarn’s long-term durability.

I'm optimistic that Fiddlesticks Wren will retain its stitch definition and colour vibrancy even with repeated washing. This is particularly important for projects intended for babies or young children, where items may need to be washed frequently. The yarn's resilience is something I look forward to testing more thoroughly in the future, but based on my initial experience, I expect it to hold up well and maintain its smooth, polished appearance for quite some time.

Ideal Projects: My Take

With its beautiful texture and promising durability, Fiddlesticks Wren strikes me as an excellent choice for a variety of projects:

  • Amigurumi: With it's stunning, neat stitch definition, Wren is ideal for creating detailed, intricate amigurumi characters.

  • Wearables: Fiddlesticks Wren would work wonderfully for lightweight tops, cardigans, and accessories that require a breathable fabric with a nice drape. Its texture is soft and comfortable, making it ideal for summer pieces or layering.

  • Home Decor: For sturdy items like coasters, placemats, and dishcloths, this yarn’s durability and structure would be well-suited. It has the strength to withstand regular use while maintaining its form.

  • Baby Items: Soft and gentle against the skin, Fiddlesticks Wren would be lovely for baby loveys, blankets, bibs, and tiny garments. Its smooth feel and washable quality make it practical for items that need both comfort and durability.

In short, I believe Fiddlesticks Wren is a versatile yarn that could adapt well to many project types, bringing both elegance and resilience to whatever you create. I'm excited to explore it more for different types of projects!
