How to Close a Hole in Amigurumi

A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect Amigurumi Finishing

In this tutorial, I’ll guide you step-by-step through the process of closing a hole in an amigurumi piece, whether it’s a ball or the head of your crochet toy – any part that needs to be completely sealed. I use this crochet technique to neatly close the hole in all my amigurumi projects, creating a finish that’s almost as tidy as the Magic Ring you began with!

How to Close a Hole in an Amigurumi Piece: Photo Tutorial

Step 1: Fasten Off and Prepare the Tail

After fastening off, cut the yarn – leaving a tail of at least 10 cm (4 inches). Draw the yarn tail all the way through the final loop to secure your last stitch.

Step 2: Thread and Begin Gathering

Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Working in the same direction you crocheted, insert your needle under the front loop only of each stitch around the opening (from outside to inside). This step gathers the remaining stitches neatly toward the centre.

Step 3: Close the Hole

Once you’ve woven under all the stitches, gently pull the yarn tail to close the centre hole. Tighten it just enough so that the hole disappears completely – no gaps or puckering.

Step 4: Smooth Out Any Bump

Sometimes a small bump might appear after tightening. To smooth it out, insert your needle through the centre of the ring you just created and push it through to the opposite side of the piece. When you pull the yarn through, the bump will vanish, leaving a beautifully smooth finish.

Step 5: Secure and Hide the Yarn Tail

To finish, weave in the yarn end, then trim it close to the surface. The cut end will retract neatly inside your amigurumi – invisible and secure!

Tip: Using this method ensures your amigurumi pieces have a clean, professional look. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference in your final result.

Final Thoughts

This is the most common and simple way to close a hole in amigurumi, and it takes just a moment to do. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll see how quick and satisfying it is – and how much cleaner and neater your finished pieces look.

A smooth, invisible close is one of those small details that make a big difference, helping your amigurumi look beautifully finished every time.

So thread your needle, give it a quick go, and enjoy the lovely feeling of a perfectly polished piece
